鹿児島県の沖永良部島は「新ジャガ」、早出しメークインのブランド産地として有名だ。しかし、今、ジャガイモ生産者たちの意欲は必ずしも高いとは言えない。農産物のブランドとは何か。かつて沖永良部の新ジャガは市場で話題になり、品薄でブローカーたちが買いに走った。そしてそれによる高値は生産者を喜ばせた。しかし、やがて一時の高値に浮かれた産地はその価格にあぐらをかくようになる。その現状を上村英樹は、選ばれるに足る産地であり続けるための誇りや自負を忘れていると見る。沖永良部で新しい産地ブランド作りに取り組む上村の思いを伝えたい。（昆吉則）（以下つづく）
